Progress Report
Saturday, December 1
The dedication of the Mejia home was held at 12:00 p.m. with an inspiring number of attendees to celebrate the occasion. At one point, so many people were inside for the open house there wasn’t room for anyone to come in. It was a very emotional event to see and hear the appreciation of the Mejia family. After the dedication there was an Interfaith Celebration next door at the AME Zion Church of Newburgh. This too was an inspiring experience of community.
Check out the photos of the house and dedication below.

Wednesday, November 28
The finishing touches are being done prior to the dedication this Saturday. A large crew was working today painting trim, caulking, replacing egress windows and grouting the bathroom tile. The siding is complete as is the landscaping along the side of the house. As you can see below, it looks great!

Wednesday, October 24
All the sheetrock and taping is done an it looks great. The current major task is painting all the walls and ceilings inside, starting with primer. It was raining today so we couldn’t work on the siding which is now about 80% complete.

Wednesday, October 10
A lot of progress was made since last week installing the fiberglass insulation.
Today the main focus was on completing the insulation prior to the building inspection in the afternoon, putting in the kitchen vent and cleaning up so that the sheetrocking can start.

Wednesday, October 3
Many thanks to I.B.E.W. local 363 volunteers for completing all of the rough-in electrical work.
Thank you also to Matt Pillius of Mid-Hudson plumbing who completed the rough-in plumbing.
We moved about 70 bales of fiberglass insulation into the house, awaiting volunteers on a rainy day.
The siding continues to go up on all 4 sides of the house. You can see the current progress in the photo below along with some of our volunteers. Not pictured are the volunteers up on the scaffolding who were still working.

Wednesday, September 19
We have electricity! After months of working with a very noisy and heavy electric generator, we now have electric service with 4 outlets inside. Full interior wiring will start the end of the month.
Plumbing work has started inside in the basement.
The siding work today was focused on the left side of the house in the narrow alley next to the neighboring house which can’t be shown very well. More window trim went on as well as the ceiling in the entry-way.
Wednesday, September 12
Last weekend all 19 windows were installed despite the exceptionally hot weather.
On Wednesday we received training from Randy, the representative from the James Hardie siding company and starting the siding. This should look great when it is finished.

Wednesday, September 5
The excavation for the new water/sewer lines is done and by this afternoon the plumber should have made the appropriate connections and the excavation filled in. The prepping for installation of the windows and siding is in progress. We are ready for electrical and plumbing work to be done inside.

Wednesday, August 22
The roof is almost completely shingled, we now have interior stairs and an exterior door in the back.

The roof is mostly sheathed and should be weatherproof soon.

Second floor walls up - Saturday, July 21
During the week there was great progress with most of the 2nd floor walls going up. Today there were teams putting up the second floor joists, pouring a footing for the front steps and patching in exterior sheathing.

Second floor walls going up - Saturday, July 14
Three teams were busy working today. Under Dave Hinsvark’s direction, a team of women constructed and raised the wall facing the street. Another team finished the subflooring for the second floor. And a third team had the dirty job of parging the foundation in a narrow space inside the excavation.

First floor walls up! - Friday, July 13
A youth group from Zion Lutheran Church, Long Valley, NJ was here this week and made great progress, putting down the first floor deck, raising all the first floor walls and installing the floor joists for the second. This was despite temperatures in the upper-90s the beginning of the week. The photos below show our satisfied and successful volunteers

Concrete poured & walls up - Friday, July 6
The concrete for the last wall section and footings has been poured. The concrete block walls are up and the concrete floor is poured.
A youth group from Zion Lutheran Church, Long Valley, NJ will be here the coming week to start framing.

Concrete poured & more forms- Saturday, June 23
The concrete was poured on Tuesday and by Saturday it was set enough to remove the forms and build the forms for the footings for the cement block wall and for another section which will have a concrete wall.

Excavation & Forms - Saturday, June 16
It took longer than expected to complete the excavation but we are on a roll now with putting up the forms and getting ready to pour concrete for the foundation..

Ground-breaking - Saturday, May 5
We had a beautiful day for the official kick-off of this project to provide a house for the Meija Family before the end of 2007.
The building permit was approved the previous day so we are all set to move forward with the rebuilding.
An excavator will be brought in this week to dig out the debris in the old foundation so that we can pour the new foundation and begin the framing process.

March 16
A team of students from Rutgers helped with the demolition so we are now ready to start from the ground up once the zoning board and building inspector approvals are received.

Project Start - March 2007
Below are some photos of the original house at the start of the project.
