Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will sponsor the construction of hundreds of additional Habitat for Humanity homes every year in the United States by combining the efforts of 2.8 million Thrivent Financial members with Lutheran congregations and institutions, communities, partner families and Habitat affiliates. More than two-thirds of the funding for each home will be contributed by Thrivent Financial, its members and local chapters. The remaining funding will be raised through the ongoing efforts of local Lutheran congregations and Habitat affiliates.
Our Thrivent chapter (Hudson Valley) was selected to sponsor and support a Thrivent Builds project in Newburgh, one of the economically hardest hit areas of our region. As part of the project, our chapter needs to raise 10% of the cost of the house, this year, $9,647, . 65% of the cost will be covered by Thrivent Financial and 25% by the Newburgh Habitat for Humanity affiliate. 50% of the volunteer hours need to be provided by Lutherans and of those hours, 25% need to be provided by Thrivent members (associate or beneficial).
This year’s project is at 105 Washington Street in Newburgh, just one block from Washington’s Headquarters historic site.
We just learned that our grant request to Thrivent for 2008 was approved, so stay tuned for information on next year’s build.

The dedication of the Mejia home was held at 12:00 p.m. with an inspiring number of attendees to celebrate the occasion. At one point, so many people were inside for the open house there wasn’t room for anyone to come in. It was a very emotional event to see and hear the appreciation of the Mejia family. After the dedication there was an Interfaith Celebration next door at the AME Zion Church of Newburgh. This too was an inspiring experience of community.
